About us Our story

The Care and Protection of Children (CPC) Learning Network was founded in 2005 as a response to a need for more rigorous measurement of the evolving field of child protection in emergencies.

Our journey

From these roots in humanitarian emergencies, our work has expanded its focus to re-envision approaches that advance child well-being more broadly. Our core belief is that children’s care, protection, and development are integrated elements of overall child well-being.

Research projects led by in-country experts – in Uganda, Indonesia, and Colombia –went on to inspire the development of our Network’s growing focus on supporting nationally rooted research institutes. These robust policy-focused research centers are the pillars of the Network, with our Secretariat at Columbia University supporting in a coordination role.

Three approaches guide the work of the CPC Learning Network

Support

The Global South leading change to ensure children can thrive

Supporting leadership in the Global South is essential for effective policy and practice on child well-being. Our partners’ research is the center of our work.

Inform

Research and science to inform better policies and programs

We strive to build a stronger evidence base that helps address emerging challenges and inspire action. Our extensive resource hub has our latest learnings and recommendations on re-envisioning child well-being.

Confront

Sparking critical conversations that challenge how we support children, youth, and families

We strive to learn from our successes and failures. Our work has increasingly aimed to engage diverse perspectives, ask the challenging questions, and confront critically unaddressed topics that help us to truly re-envision approaches to child well-being.
